Decorating Your Early Years Setting
A good early years interior can not only encourage your little ones to learn, but to explore their environment. The design and décor of your setting is a great way to show off the type of atmosphere you want to give to your children. It can illustrate the learning style you’re looking to provide but also create a safe and nurturing environment for your children.

Utilize Your Space
Whatever your setting, be sure to make use of the space that you have. Assign different areas for different learning aspects and have a clear differentiation for what each area is for. This is where furniture and certain accessories can be of good use. For example, use zone signs so children know what activities are for which area.
Rug furnishings can really bring your different areas to life. For play areas, prints such as our Monkey Drop Stitch Rug can incorporate some fun into your setting. Whilst neutral patterned rugs like this Scallop Flatweave are lovely additions for calming and reading zones. Early years settings can come in different sizes as do floor furnishings. For small spaces, look into various shaped rugs such as clouds and stars which can be nice statement pieces for the space.
Colours and Lighting
Consider taking advantage of natural lighting and using neutral colours for your space. Natural lighting will boost children’s mental wellbeing and productivity. However, if using artificial lighting, aim to go for soft lighting to create a similar ambience and effect of natural light.
When it comes to colours, blue tones are known to promote well-being, tranquility, and productivity. Whereas bright colours are great for displays as these colour schemes promote excitement and creativity. Muted hues such as blue and green are ideal for quiet areas such as reading corners to promote a sense of calmness and focus.
Create a Safe Space
Above anything, the most important aspect of your early years setting is making sure it is a safe and comfortable space for your little ones. All materials and furnishings should be checked and childproofed according to health and safety regulations. Keep first-aid supplies at hand as these are essential to allow immediate care to any injured child. Also, keep anything harmful or hazardous locked away in storage, and the setting tidy and organised.
